Hyderabad: A group of teachers is organising nukkad (street) plays in the old city to educate the people about the increasing communalism and the unnecessary exercise of the National Register of Citizens.
A group of talented actors from Tech For India (TFI) are displaying their creativity and conveying an important message about pluralism and unity by performing these street plays. They performed in Kishan Bagh of the old city to highlight the importance of the Constitution and secular culture which is now in danger.
In typical street play style, they first moved in a circle clapping their hands and chanting ‘Aao aao Bharat dekho, sab se pyara Bharat dekho’, before turning to the audience.
They performed scenes that depicted the changing attitude of common people who were becoming intolerant of people of other communities and were influenced by the propaganda of communal forces. The conversations between two callers highlighted the issue of the unwillingness of people to rent flats to people of other communities.
In contrast, they show how people used to live together and participate in each other's festivals, which is the real India. They also highlighted the issue of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National People's Register (NPR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) that the government is determined to implement. At the end of the play, the group members recited the Preamble of the Constitution of India along with the viewers.
Leader of the group Abhijeet Biswas told Deccan Chronicle: “We have decided to educate the people about the importance and benefits of brotherhood and rights of citizens accorded by the Constitution. This was the first play of the recent series. We will perform plays in 10 more places in the old city and later we plan to tour the entire state.”
