First street vending zone to come up near Shilparamam

The civic body has hired a third party agency to study and implement the street-vending policy in the city.

Hyderabad: The GHMC has decided to set up its first street-vending zone near Shilparamam. The corporation has earmarked the space near the underpass at Shilparamam for it.

The civic body has hired a third party agency to study and implement the street-vending policy in the city. Depending on the outcome of the implementation, the corporation will replicate it in other zones in the city.

According to highly placed sources, Ernst & Young LLP (EY) have been asked to study the local conditions of each urban local body (ULB) and implement the street-vending policy based on certain parameters, including length and breadth of the road, traffic density, population and footfall in that particular zone.

Asked about the failure of implementation of the street-vending policy in Hyderabad, a GHMC official said the Hyderabad Metro Rail and traffic police have played spoilsport in its implementation. He said that while HMRL disturbed the location of street-vending zones, traffic policy did not agree with the remaining locations, citing severe traffic snarls.

The official said that the corporation has distributed identity cards to the vendors and constructed a few shops near Moosapet metro station but they did not yield the desired results due to the location. He said that the shelters near Moosapet station have become hideouts for anti-social elements.

The official said these issues were discussed with the EY team.
