Hyderabad: Doctors protest for safety
Hyderabad: Resident doctors and staff of Global Hospital staged a protest demanding that doctors be saved from hooligans, and that attacking doctors would not help patients who are struggling for life.
The doctors will meet senior police officials on Thursday demanding that Act 11 of 2003 which prohibits violence against doctors must be invoked against the attackers.
Dr Sanjiv Yadav, a senior member of the Indian Medical Association, said, “The Act is stringent as it will ensure that such attacks on doctors and hospitals do not take plac-e. In this Act, the attacker is liable for jail and also has to pay twice the compensation. We want the government to book them under this Act.”
The video of abuse and destruction in the hospital has been widely circulated. Within the medical community, they are discussing how critical care patients should be evaluated. This will in the long run create trouble even for genuine patients.
Dr Mohan Gupta, president of the city branch of IMA, said, “The patient at Global Hospital arrived in a very critical condition. But the relatives were not willing to shift her to another hospital when advised. They refused to take invasive treatment and were also not willing to give consent for any treatment which required insertion of tubes into the body. This left the hospital with no choice."
He said the incident was now going to make doctors very alert and if they find that the relatives are not going to co-operate the treatment will not be offered.
