BBMP used only 5 percent of budget, says Oppn politician

He challenged the coalition to bring out a white paper on the real development carried out since the coalition took over in 2016.

Bengaluru: Of the Rs 10,120 crore budget allotted for the BBMP, only 5 percent has been utilised, alleged leader of opposition Padmanabha Reddy during the Palike council meeting on Wednesday.

Mr Reddy slammed the Congress-JD(S) administration at the civic body, terming it a “percentage coalition”. He said that the ruling dispensation is repeating the term 'development' like a mantra without executing any work on the ground, but indulging in corruption.

He challenged the coalition to bring out a white paper on the real development carried out since the coalition took over in 2016.

Issuing of ceremonial silver key and baton, and distribution of tablets to corporators are the only real achievements of the BBMP, he said and added that the civic body is functioning only after High Court directions.

Even after completing the total station survey of over 800 buildings which could have fetched Rs 550 crore is just not being collected. Illegal optical fibre cables are being put out everywhere and there is no one to monitor this and slap fines. While the Palike could have earned Rs 200 crore through fines, it has accrued only Rs 36 crore, he said. Economically backward SSLC and PUC students, who were promised books, have not got a single book, he said.

“The BBMP has failed completely. The ruling coalition has reduced the civic body to such a state that people have lost faith in it,” he said.
