Extend deadline for applying crop insurance: Anbumani amadoss
Chennai: The PMK has urged the government to extend the deadline for applying crop insurance in the cyclone-hit areas.
In a statement on Monday, PMK MP Anbumani Ramadoss said that a huge number of farmers in the delta belt lost standing crops, while farmers are facing hurdles in applying crop insurance.
“However, the government has turned a blind eye to care about farmers and it is highly condemnable. Moreover, it has become common for delta region to face either drought or natural calamities. It is crop insurance which gives a new lease of life to farmers,” the MP said, adding that the Cyclone Gaja destroyed standing crops in a huge level.
The government has set deadline for applying crop insurance till November 30, but it is impossible for farmers to meet the deadline, as they face hurdles due to cyclone, the former union minister said, adding that since necessary documents are in need to apply for insurance, the farmers are unable to take photocopies of documents and they need time.
Anbumani also urged the government to extend the deadline till December 30 after normalcy returned in the cyclone-hit areas.
