Chennai: Rains continued to lash many regions across Tamil Nadu sustaining Saturday’s overnight downpour.
The Delta belt, ECR belt of Siruseri, Kelambakkam, Uthandi, Thiruporur, and Kovalam along with southern parts of Tamil Nadu received good rainfall on Sunday.
A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal brought rains not only in Chennai but also in Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Kancheepuram.
Chennai recorded 8mm of rainfall and had temperature readings of a high of 28 degree Celsius and a minimum of 24.5 C. While Parangipettai and Sethiyathoppu each received 4 cm of rain, Nagapattinam, Karaikal and Vedharanyam got 2 cm in the last 24 hours, ending 8.30 am on Sunday.
While pedestrians and motorists waded through waterlogged streets in parts of the city, residents were troubled due to power outages in several parts of the city including Nungambakkam, Ekkatuthangal, Chetpet and Tambaram.
“The low pressure is expected to bring rain in most parts of southern Tamil Nadu and northern coastal districts. Chennai and southern regions of Tamil Nadu are to get intermittent moderate rains for the next two days. Fishermen should exercise caution while venturing into the sea as the wind speed may reach 45-55 km per hour”, said S Stella, director, regional meteorological center.
Issuing a heavy rainfall warning, RMC officials said that heavy rainfall was expected in southern Tamil Nadu in the next 24-48 hours and heavy to very heavy rainfall was expected in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari.
