Dowry demand: Three of family kill self in Tiruvarur
Tiruvarur: In a suspected case of dowry harassment even before the wedding, three persons of a family including two women allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at Ammalur village under Edaiyur police limits in Tiruvarur district in the wee hours of Sunday.
Police said Ganesan (55), a goldsmith by profession, his wife Rajeswari (50) and their daughter Geetha (23) were found dead in their house. The tragedy came to light when neighbours, finding the doors of the goldsmith's house remained shut for a long time, broke open the doors today.
While Ganesan’s eldest son Rajkumar, is working abroad in Singapore, the couple had handed over their younger son, Hariharasudhan (20), a mentally challenged boy, to one of their neighbours on Saturday night before the other three sought to end their lives in a suicide pact.
Police rushed to the place and removed the bodies of the three deceased persons to the Government hospital at Thiruthuraipoondi for post-mortem.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the couple had finalized a marriage proposal for their daughter, scheduled to be held in January 2018.
However, the family head was under severe depression in the last two days with the bridegroom's side demanding dowry and at one stage had reportedly asked Ganesan to call off the wedding. Even as police suspect this could have led to the tragedy, they are awaiting the return of Ganesan’s elder son from Singapore to get a complaint from him to enable further investigation of the case.
