Thiruvananthapuram: Prasanth steps down as mayor

Takes leave without formal farewell.

Thiruvananthapuram: After the historical win at Vattiyoorkavu byelection, V.K. Prasanth on Saturday resigned as Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. He handed over the resignation letter to the corpora-tion secretary at the office around noon. He took charge as the Mayor of Thiruvana-nthapuram Corporation – the largest Corporation in the state – back in 2015.

None of the political parties including UDF, BJP or LDF have a clear mandate to rule the corporation and with almost a year a left for the local body election, hunt is on for a new Mayor. MLA V.K. Prasanth said that CPM is the only party with largest mandate at the council and there is no confusion regarding which party would lead the council.

The emergency corporation council convened on Saturday was cancelled following the resignation of Mayor V.K. Prasanth. However, cancellation of the council hasn’t gone down well with the UDF. “This is not the way to resign or part with his colleagues. He was our Mayor for the past four years and he simply left without addressing us. It’s no doubt an anti-democratic move and UDF strongly condemns this,” said UDF councillor Anil Kumar. He said that they all got the notice for the council three days ahead and alleged that the BJP is trying to create controversies.

Meanwhile, BJP councillors filed a complaint with additional chief Secretary T.K. Jose against conducting council meet without mandatory three-day notice. BJP councillor M.R. Gopan said that holding council meet without three days notice is a violation of Kerala Municipal Act. “The additional chief secretary demanded an explanation from the corporation secretary and decided to cancel,” said Mr Gopan.

Though an emergency council was convened, V.K. Prasanth decided to resign before the scheduled time for the council meet on Saturday.
