Rein in private buses fleecing public: MK Stalin

The State government has failed to curb this “daylight robbery”

CHENNAI: The DMK president, M.K. Stalin on Saturday came down heavily on the state government’s inaction against the private omnibus operators who are reportedly making a killing on Deepavali festival eve by collecting exorbitant fares from passengers going home from here to their respective native places for celebrating the festival.

In a post on his Facebook page, Mr. Stalin pointed out to reports of the private bus operators were charging three times and more of the normal fare from passengers going home for the festival.

The State government has failed to curb this “daylight robbery”, the DMK leader said and urged that steps should be taken to immediately stop this excessive fare collection.

Charging the government with being impervious to the common people’s suffering, Stalin in his post quoted an official himself pleading helplessness in reining in the private omnibus operators due to alleged political interference.

At least before the people undertake the return journey from their homes back to their work places in Chennai and other cities in the State, the government must step in to stop this excess collection of bus fares by the omnibus operators, he added.
