Hyderabad: Kidnap attempt ends in arrest, boy rescued

Duo suspected boy's mother stole Rs 15,000 from them

Hyderabad: A Class VI student was kidnapped by two men, both known to his family, and demanded a hefty ransom. After receiving a complaint, the police swung into action and arrested the accused, the natives of Uttar Pradesh, and handed the boy back to his family.

The arrested were identified as Sonu alias Mahanth Yadav and his brother Mahender Yadav. They had kidnapped Rakesh Varma, a student of Ravi Brilliant School at Katedan, police said. Varma’s family had migrated to the city from UP about seven years ago.

“On Wednesday, Sonu, a labourer who is known to the boy’s family came home and noticed that Rs 15,000 was missing from his hand bag. Suspecting that Rakesh’s mother Rukmini Devi had stolen the money, Sonu decided to take revenge,” Mailardevpally inspector K. Sataiah Goud said.

“He teamed up with his brother Mahender Yadav and went to Ravi’s school at about 5 pm and kidnapped him,” the inspector said. They then began demanding money from the child's parents.

Based on a complaint lodged by Ns Rukmini Devi, a kidnap case was registered and three special teams were formed to trace and arrest Sonu, the prime suspect. “The duo was nabbed from Attapur and the child was rescued late on Thursday night,” Mr Goud said, adding that the men were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
