Congress protests in Bengaluru, lays siege to CBI office
Bengaluru: Hundreds of Congress workers on Friday laid siege to the office of CBI in the city and protested against the alleged misuse of CBI by the central government.
It was part of the Congress’ nationwide protest against the Central government, which stripped CBI Director Alok Verma of his powers recently.
What disappointed the Congress workers was the absence of party leaders. Except AICC general secretary and Karnataka in-charge K.C. Venugopal, no other leader took part in the protest, defying the high command diktat.
Mr Venugopal said that the Central government was scared of the CBI probe, which had got crucial leads into the Rafale fighter jet deal. The CBI team had collected some documents and was pursuing the investigation when the Centre suddenly stripped the CBI chief of his powers and sent him and CBI number two Rakesh Asthana on mandatory leave.
Mr Venugopal accused the Modi government of misusing the CBI to scuttle the Rafale probe. The agitation started around 11.30 am and went on for about one-and-a-half hours
