Hyderabad: Patient gets Rs 5 lakh compensation

The hospital authorities claimed that there was callousness on the patient's part and he was negligent by visiting many hospitals.

Hyderabad: In a recent judgment by the Hyderabad district consumer forum, M Muralidhar Rao, a resident of Chandanagar whose leg had to be amputated because of medical negligence, got justice after five years as the forum ordered Prime Hospitals, a city based multi speciality hospital at Kukatpally, and Dr N Lalitha, a cardiologist from NIMS hospital, to pay Rs 5.4 lakh with 9 per cent interest as compensation.

He was an electrician and had an angiogram performed by Dr N Lalitha on March 23, 2012. On the advice of Dr N Lalitha, the patient had an implantation of stents procedure at Yashoda Hospital. Later, Muralidhar suffered pain where the angiogram was done. Dr N Lalitha’s medications did not help and the colour of his skin on his right leg started changing. Due to unbearable pain, he went to Image hospitals where his leg was amputated.

The hospital authorities claimed that there was callousness on the patient’s part and he was negligent by visiting many hospitals.

The forum observed, “The complainant was rendered permanently disabled and is entitled for a reasonable compensation.”
