Banners will be removed soon, Tamil Nadu govt tells High court

Banners and hoardings erected illegally in connection with the MGR centenary celebrations at Tiruchy will be removed.

Chennai: The state government has informed the Madras High Court that all the banners and hoardings erected illegally in connection with the MGR centenary celebrations at Tiruchy will be removed immediately.

Advocate General Vijay Narayan made his submission to this effect when a Public Interest Litigation filed by social activist Traffic Ramaswamy came up for hearing before a division bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and M. Sundar.

Advocate general further informed the Bench that the banners and hoardings, which were erected with necessary permissions from the authorities concerned, will also be removed immediately after the function is over.

Ramaswamy in his petition sought a direction to initiate action against the police and other officials in the city of Trichy for their failure to take action against those who had erected banners, flex boards and other advertisements illegally in connection with the function arranged by the state government on Thursday.

Stating that permission was given for the erection of 200 banners right from the Airport to the function venue, besides 20 more was permitted to be erected by various government agencies, advocate general submitted that if any illegal banners were erected without permission, they will be removed immediately and even the licensed banners will be removed immediately after the function was over.

Recording the submissions of Advocate general, the bench asked him to ensure that all the banners were removed by tomorrow and posted the matter to October 29 for filing compliance.
