Ammunition depot of Asaf Jahi era crumbling

In fact, Barood Kotha was then situated in a remote corner.

Hyderabad: The Barood Kotha or the central ammunition depot of the Asaf Jahi era lies in a dilapidated state in the premises of the Falaknuma Junior College, with no government body intervention to preserve its glorious past. Now the junior college functions from the vast compound.

Although, the ammunition depot was closed down after the end of the Nizam era and some rooms were also razed to the ground, a few structures within the complex continue to exist, albeit in a pathetic condition.

Renowned historian Mr M. A Qayyum, said that several palaces, barracks of soldiers and ammunition depots were spread around the Falaknuma Palace.

“In fact, Barood Kotha was then situated in a remote corner. Though there are not many records about it, this has been heard from descendants of the Nizam,” Mr Qayyum said.

Local residents say that their ancestors had told them about a big compound with several small rooms situated within its precincts. “They had narrated to us about the huge cannons and its balls, and other weapons that were stored here,” said Mr Khaleel Ahmed, a resident of Jangammet locality.
