Bird flu: 1,176 infected ducks culled on Wednesday in Kuttanad

Duck farmers protested against selective culling instead of all ducks.

Alappuzha: The rapid response force (RRF) set up jointly by the district administration, the animal husbandry department and the health department culled 1176 infected ducks at various places in Kuttanad on Wednesday. The culling will continue in Neelamperoor, where the RRF has already conducted a survey to identify infected birds, on Thursday. Nodal officer V. Gopakumar said the slaughter was carried out at Thakazhy (396) Cheruthana (180) and Muttar (600). The district administration will coordinate the health, animal husbandry and revenue departments prevent the spread of the disease. Meanwhile, duck farmers protested against selective culling instead of all ducks. Killing selected birds, they say, only helps increase scare.
