Mentally-ill Odisha man chained for 30 years

Gradually, he failed to even recognise his loved ones.

Bhubaneswar: Tied up in chains in a dark room of a thatched house, Ramakant Behera of Udayapur village under Dasarathpur block in Odisha’s Jajpur district stares out of the window with naive curiosity, completely unaware of the happenings around him.

Ramakant, around 50 years of age, has been confined to the room by his family members after he turned violent without reason and started attacking people without provocation when he was pursuing his Intermediate.

Gradually, he failed to even recognise his loved ones.

While financial constraint has deterred the family from admitting Ramakant to a hospital for treatment, they have been seeking help.

“We are financially weak which is why we can’t bear the cost of his treatment. He lost his mental balance 30 years back and it has become difficult for us to take care of him,” said Ramakant’s mother Sitarani Behera.

Ramakanta’s father, Sridhar Behera said, “After losing mental balance, he became violent. We are trying our best to get government assistance.”
