Hyderabad High Court turns down plea on rythu bandhu scheme

The petitioner told the court that if the financial assistance was distributed before the elections it would impact the voters.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday refused to entertain a petition seeking to stay distribution of financial aid to farmers under the Rythu Bandhu scheme in the ensuing Rabi season till the completion of Assembly elections.

Mr K. Anthony Reddy, a practicing advocate, had moved the PIL seeking to direct the Election Commission and Chief Electoral Officer to complete the elections to the Assembly before the distribution of the financial aid to farmers for the Rabi season. The petitioner told the court that if the financial assistance was distributed before the elections it would impact the voters.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice V. pointed out that the decision to distribute the financial aid was not in the regime of the caretaker government.

The bench said that it would not be proper to say that voters would be attracted with the distribution of aid; if the contention of the petitioner was accepted then distribution of fair price rice must be stopped.
