Rs 1,566 crore crop loan issued to farmers: Tamil Nadu government

Minister said the state government has been taking step to ensure that farmers get crop loans to ensure harvest at the right time.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday said it has so far issued Rs 1,566.14 crore as crop loan to more than 2.44 lakh customers of various cooperative banks across the state.

During a review meeting of the cooperatives department, cooperatives minister Sellur K. Raju also said the state government has enrolled more than 78,900 farmers in the Prime Minister’s Fasal Bhima Yojana (Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme) till September 15, 2017.

On the crop loans issued to farmers, Raju told the meeting that the state government has set a target of disbursing Rs 7,000 crore as crop loan to farmers across the state since the monsoon has so far been success. “Till September 15, a total of Rs 1556.14 crore has been disbursed to 2.44 lakh customers as against Rs 741.09 crore for 1.02 lakh members during the same period in 2016," the minister said.

He also said the state government has been taking step to ensure that farmers get crop loans to ensure harvest at the right time. On Prime Minister’s insurance scheme, he said more than Rs 1,716 crore has been disbursed as compensation amount to more than 5.38 lakh farmers. He also said government has also made arrangements to distribute 92,824 Rupay cards to farmers. “More than 50 new ATMs have been set up at central cooperative banks in TN,” he said.
