Telangana: Kids take fish off the roads
Hyderabad: The floods in many areas located near water bodies brought with them fish and snails into houses. At the lakeside of Alwal, residents found fish in shallow water and many kids took took them home.
Ms B Laxmi, a school teacher, explained, “Children were so excited to find these fish in water that they caught it in their hands from the flooded street. But as they are fresh water fish, putting them in water tanks will not help them survive. For a few days we have to put it in the bucket and later they can be released into the lakes again.”
Similarly, some of the residents said they found brown and slightly maroon-coloured slugs creeping on their walls.
Zoologist C. Srinivaslu said that slugs live in grass and in low vegetations in wet lands. “Near the lake areas the water levels are rising and they are creeping into houses.”
Shell-less snails were also being seen by the residents who are taken aback by their in their area.
Mr Venkat Raman, a retired Urdu school teacher in Kapra, explained, “Earlier thousands of these were seen when the lake levels were moderately high. We are seeing them again after almost 20 years.” Some of the residents took to killing them with acid.
