Jaishankar takes a dig at China's debt at B20 meet

New Delhi: In a veiled dig at China, external affairs minister S. Jaishankar mentioned that some countries have accrued unsustainable debts from opaque projects. Speaking at the B20 meeting in the capital, he highlighted a "new India" with its own 5G technology, indigenous Covid vaccines, and lunar spacecraft capabilities.

Jaishankar also underscored the challenges faced by the developing world, particularly the Global South, due to the Covid pandemic and the Ukraine conflict's impact on food and fertiliser security. He emphasised that the international system is dominated by the developed nations of the Global North, a fact reflected in the composition of the G20. He stressed the importance of providing special attention to the Global South and mentioned India's efforts in representing the views of 125 nations from the Global South in G20 meetings and summits, following consultations in January.

The EAM highlighted India's assistance to approximately 100 nations with Covid vaccines during the pandemic and support provided to various nations during crises, including Fiji, Mozambique, Myanmar, Turkey, and Yemen.
