Road accidents: Black spots continue to be a major factor in India

The state has 79 accident-prone black spots of which 23 were rectified.

Hyderabad: One of the major contribution for deaths in road accidents are ‘black spots’, where different issues such as poor road engineering and driver distractions cause accidents.

One 500-metre stretch saw five deaths in one year, officials said.

Such spots are being systematically being identified from time to time and redesigned.

The state has 79 accident-prone black spots of which 23 were rectified. This resulted in the reduction of 216 deaths from the previous year, said Mr T. Krishna Prasad, chairman of the Road Safety Authority. He said coordination of all departments including, traffic police, revenue, roads and buildings and RTA was needed to improve road safety.

One of the biggest accidents in the state’s history, which resulted in the death of 62 passengers when their bus plunged off the Kondagattu ghat road in September last year, could have been avoided had a safety wall been constructed on the stretch.

The wall was constructed and iron guards planted three months after the accident.
