In-Patient wing opens at CCRc
Kochi: Cochin Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) which was launched with an outpatient (OP) wing three years ago on the payward building of Ernakulam Government Medical College (EMC) crossed a milestone on Monday when the limited In-Patient (IP) wing also was opened at the centre without much fanfare.
"The facility has been launched with six beds after the culture report on the operation theatre proved that it is sterile. Operation theatre is a major aspect of any in-patient facility and one theatre has been provided by the EMC," said Dr P.G. Balagopal, medical superintendent of CCRC.
He said that the Rotary Club too has come forward to sponsor five more beds at CCRC. "Initially we are focusing on minor surgeries at the operation theatre and after the deployment of the additional doctors and other workforce we will start major surgeries and we hope to do it in a month," said Dr Balagopal.
He said that appointment orders have been issued for an anesthetist, one surgical oncologist and a hemato oncologist. "In addition four duty junior doctors too are being deployed apart from nursing staff and technicians," said Dr Balagopal.
The medical superintendent said that the CCRC efforts to get a full-time radiologist have not borne fruit. Currently CCRC has four surgeons; gynaec oncology surgeon Dr Neetha Sreedharan and head and neck surgeons Director Dr Moni Kuriakose, medical superintendent Dr P G Balagopal and Dr Sisha Liz Abraham apart from RMO and radiation oncologist Dr Paul George and medical oncologist Dr Prem Ravivarma.
