Underground works turn death traps in Kukatpally

Incomplete underground drainage line and road widening works by the GHMC have aggravated the poor road conditions.

Hyderabad: Basic infrastructure woes haunt Kukatpally, due to rains and partly due to the never-ending road and development works. Roads in some of the locations like Vivekananda Nagar, Chaitanya Nagar, Sumitra Nagar, Sri Krishna Nagar, Bagh Ameer and Allwyn colony are in pathetic condition.

Incomplete underground drainage line and road widening works by the GHMC have aggravated the poor road conditions. When the UGD works were in progress, due to lack of a caution board, a car ended up in a trench on Saturday.

A resident Mr Maruti said, “Between 3 and 4 am, due to heavy rain, the potholes were filled completely with water and there were no safety sign boards around or anyone to guide. A car drove into the lane and the driver couldn’t identify the pothole and the car fell into it.” When contacted, the GHMC officials said that the UGD works would be completed in a couple of days. There are two schools in the vicinity and the drainage work poses a threat not only to the citizens but also to schoolchildren.

Similar is case at hospitals in Vivekananda Nagar. The road in front of Ragi Hospital is not motorable. A trench in front of Anupama Hospital was temporarily filled with coconut shells by fruit vendors to make it motorable. However, the shells could not sustain the number of vehicles crossing the road. Meanwhile, similar conditions were witnessed at Chaitanya Nagar where the roads are inundated even during a slight downpour. Across the stretch, there was either water logging or trenches, making it difficult for commuters to pass by. Vivekananda Nagar road was one of the well-maintained roads over the years, but it lies in neglect, allege residents.

A resident Mr. Ram Reddy said, “For this slight downpour, the internal roads have deteriorated. The number of commuters on the internal roads has increased over the years, which the roads are unable to sustain. There is an immediate need to improve the infrastructure before any fatality happens.”. Despite increase in the number of people and construction activity, Kukatpally roads certainly have not got the attention required.
