Kochi: The state government has deployed fishermen for flood rescue operation wi-th a clear focus, said Fisheries minister J. Mercykutty Amma. She was addressing the meeting convened by fisheries department here on Sunday to honour the fishermen from Ernakulam who saved hundreds of stranded people during heavy floods.
“The state will treasure forever the unique service of fishermen during the unprecedented natural disaster. All sections of society stood united to save those who were devastated by the flood. Fishermen could save lives of 65,000 flood-hit people by using their 669 fishing boats and canoes. Various other NGOs used 259 boats for rescue operation,” the minister said.
On August 15, two fishermen were sent to Pat-hanamthitta with their big canoes. As the natural fury continued unabated, more fishermen were cal-led for rescue service thr-ough mike announcement in coastal belts.
“Even the fishermen who were out in the sea were called back while trucks from neighbouring states were seized to tra-nsport fishing boats to flooded areas. Later, realizing the gravity of the situation, fishermen voluntarily arranged fishing boats and moved to inundated areas,” the minister added.
The minister added that more than 70 per cent of the stranded people in Pathanamthitta were rescued by fishermen while only 30 per cent people were saved by the Central forces and other agencies.
“Though all sections of society were there in the rescue and relief works, the fishermen have to be honoured as they are marginalised section of society,” remarked the minister.
The fishermen were given Onam kit and Ona kodi. Hibi Eden MLA presided over the function. K.V. Thomas MP, MLAs P.T. Thomas, K.J. Maxi, S. Sharma, John Fernandez, M. Swaraj, V.D Satheesan, Eldhose Kunnappilly, and leaders of fisheries organisations also attended.
