HYDERABAD: Water-logging was witnessed in many colonies and on streets in different parts of the city due to the heavy rains on Friday night, giving a tough time to residents.
BS Maktha, Mayuri Marg, Prakash Nagar, LIC Colony in West Maredpally, Picket, Panjagutta and Tolichowki were flooded.
In Malkajgiri, it was a repeat of the September 2016 scenario when the state capital witnessed torrential rains for over a week, resulting in knee-deep water for a few days.
Water from the drainage overflowed in Shirdi Nagar, Satya Raghavendra Nagar and Sathi Reddy colonies in East Anandbagh of Malkajgiri which led residents, especially women and children, to stay indoors. There was no respite for them till Saturday evening.
K. Badrinath, who runs a kirana store in Shirdi Nagar, stated that water submerged the entire road by 1 am on Saturday.
“With no sign of respite, many families in the area spent a sleepless night,” he said.
Yadgiri Yadav, another resident of the area, stated that water-logging has increased in the last few years in the area.
The local corporator and GHMC officials visited the flooded colonies to take stock of the situation and pressed the monsoon emergency team into service to clear obstructions.
Corporator A Narsing Rao and electrical engineer Anil Raj stated that a flood-like situation is occurring in the area as the drainage was encroached a few decades ago, reducing its width from 30 feet to 8 feet. They attributed this as one of the reasons for the present ordeal.
“The present nala cannot withstand the flow whenever there is a heavy downpour. The government has given nod to widen the nala by removing the encroachments. Currently, it is in the tender stage,” they said.
