Chennai: Man from Delhi held for cheating

The prime suspect, Venkataraman was already arrested by CCB a few months ago, police sources said.

Chennai: Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the city police on Friday arrested a 53-year-old man from Delhi for allegedly cheating a Chennai-based doctor of Rs 2.2. crore promising to get her granddaughter a post graduate medical seat.

The accused, N.P. Ibrahim of New Delhi was brought to the city on Saturday after obtaining a transit warrant from a magistrate in the capital city. The prime suspect, Venkataraman was already arrested by CCB a few months ago, police sources said.

Ibrahim and Venkatraman had collected Rs 2.22 crore from a city based doctor, Dr K. Kalaivani, 70 of Mylapore, promising to get her granddaughter a post-graduate medical seat.

The duo cited their closeness to personnel in the Union health ministry. Believing them, the septuagenarian handed them the said money in several installments in 2013.

However, the duo couldn't get the MD seat following which she demanded the money back. As they kept dodging her, the elderly woman approached the city police with a complaint.
