Krishna water sharing for Hyderabad, decision today

The Hyderabad water issue came up in the Board meeting held here on Friday.

Hyderabad: Sharing of Krishna water for Hyderabad continues to be a bone of contention between TS and AP, even as the Krishna River Management Board is learnt to have decided to allot 47 tmc ft for Andhra Pradesh and 39 tmc ft for Telangana state to meet the irrigation and drinking water needs for September.
However, a final decision in this regard will be taken by the Board’s three-member committee on Saturday.

The Hyderabad water issue came up in the Board meeting held here on Friday.
TS representative state irrigation special secretary S.K. Joshi argued that since Hyderabad is the joint capital, both states should share Krishna water equally to meet drinking water needs of city. However, AP opposed this.

Mr Joshi pointed out that nearly 1.50 tmc ft of water per month was required for Hyderabad alone and both states should share it equally. He sought release of six tmc ft for Hyderabad. However, the Board failed to take any decision on this and stated that it would take a final decision on Saturday.

The meeting chaired by Board chairman Ram Sharan was attended by senior irrigation officials of both the states.

The TS representative demanded release of 41 tmc ft from Krishna immediately to help farmers under Nagarjunasagar left canal ayacut. They also sought implementation of telemetry method to monitor usage of water in irrigation projects.

However, the Board said it will send its three-member committee to Srisailam project on August 29 and take a decision on where to fix the telemetry equipment.
