ANANTAPUR: All gates of Tungabhadra dam were lifted and 57,450 cusecs of water released into river after the dam got almost full storage yield on Monday.
Heavy inflows into the river resulted in the submerging of historic structures and access was cut off to a few temples located at Hampi.
The five-century-old historic Saint Purandaradas mantap as well as the statue of the saint were inundated.
The Sriram Temple, located at Chakrateertha is on the verge of getting submerged completely.
Water was also flowing into the temple due to overflowing of river from Tungabhadra dam at about 15 km distance.
The Tungabhadra dam got filled in the last 10 days due to heavy floods in the Western Ghats. A total yield of 103.55 TMC ft was recorded along with 94.05 TMC ft of storage as against the total capacity of 100.86 TMC ft on Monday. Inflows were increasing for the past three days and 1,82,622 cusecs witnessed followed by 57450 cusecs of out flows.
The maximum capacity of reservoir was 1,633 ft. The water level was at 1631.20 ft on Monday evening.
TB dam secretary Nagamohan said that all gates were lifted and water released into the river. People in the low-lying areas of Tungabhadra river were alerted in the view of heavy floods to the dam.
