Kargil War heroes recall their victory against Pakistan

Widows of the Kargil martyrs were felicitated by the officials of TS and Andhra Sub Area.

Hyderabad: Brave soldiers and families of martyrs recalled their experiences during the Kargil War at a seminar on “Remembering Kargil — The Need for Vigil” in the city on Kargil Diwas day.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Kargil war.

The real heroes of that war, Colonel Bijoy Mukharjee, Col Ajay Reddy and Havaldar S. Adi Shankara Narayana Rao talked about their role in the war.

ASCI chairman K. Padmanabhaiah said Kargil was difficult terrain.

“The terrain was as high as 11,000 feet to 18,000 feet. It is a gentleman’s understanding between Pakistan and India that both would vacate their positions here in winter and resume it in other seasons. But, the Pakistan Army stayed on with the intention of attacking India. They intruded several km into India and nobody knew about it. It was some shepherds who noticed and alerted the Indian Army. The Pak Army did this misadventure without informing their political bosses,” Mr Padmanabhaiah recalled.

He observed that it was a total intelligence failure. Families of those killed in that war were present.
