Hyderabad: Chain snatchers set free, buyer gets 1-year jail

They confessed to have sold the gold chain to Amul Kolekar, a resident of Shalibanda, and it was recovered from him.

Hyderabad: In a peculiar case at Rachakonda commissionerate, a court acquitted on Friday four persons who were arrested for robbing a woman, but convicted a person caught in with the stolen gold chain. The court sentenced him to one year rigorous imprisonment and Rs 500 penalty.

A case of robbery was registered at Adibatla police station during February 2018, based on a complaint from Ganugu Yadamma, 45, a resident of Surajnagar Colony in Thurkayamjal village of Abdullapurmet mandal.

According to Rachakonda police, on February 25, 2018, when Yadamma was on her way to a relative’s house, two unidentified persons on a bike snatched her gold chain weighing 4.5 tolas.

Rajendranagar police apprehended four persons for theft. Based on their confession that they had robbed a woman at Thurkayamjal, Adibatla police arrested them. They confessed to have sold the gold chain to Amul Kolekar, a resident of Shalibanda, and it was recovered from him.

After completion of investigation, the case was charge-sheeted before the Eighteenth Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Maheshwaram, which after a trial, acquitted the suspects for lack of evidence and convicted Amul Kolekar, 27, for dishonestly receiving stolen property.

A police official from Rachakonda said, “The victim could not identify the suspects as they were wearing masks at the time of the offence. But she identified the man from whom the gold chain was recovered. The court has acquitted the accused and convicted the receiver Amul Kolekar.”
