Part of 'Button Factory' to be demolished

Many feel that the historic Hussainialam Road stretch should be preserved.

Hyderabad: A part of the button factory at Doodhbowli, which made gold and silver buttons for the Nizams’ dresses, will be demolished for ongoing road widening work.

“The machinery in the factory has to be shifted and the owners have sought some time,” said Mr Kabeer, a town planning official.

The factory was established by the Nizam VI Mir Mahboob Ali Khan in 1916 to produce buttons for the royals, high ranking officials of the police and the army.

“The factory was famous for its ornamental works. The buttons were unique and were famous all over the country,” said Mr M.A. Qayyum. Historian Dr Mohammed Safiullah said, “The buttons reflected the hard work and skills of artisans. The machinery was imported from England.” The buttons were packed in a metal casket, Dr Safiullah added.

Mr Mohd Naseer, who takes care of the factory, said only a part of the property was affected by the road-widening work, and the structure would not be demolished entirely. “Not much work is going on in the factory these days,” he said.
