IT industry will create 2 lakh jobs this year, says Nasscom president

There are concerns about the automation of software delivery service which would cut down many young engineers their jobs.

Chennai: National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) president Debjani Ghosh said that the IT industry will create two lakh jobs in the current financial year (2018-19).

Among them, one lakh new jobs are going to be created, she added. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of HR summit here on Thursday she said, “The IT companies have to invest to leverage the huge opportunity in the digital transformation. Internet of Things is one of the most important areas where new jobs are going to be created. Cyber security would also provide new employment opportunities.”

Generally, there are concerns about the automation of software delivery service which would cut down many young engineers their jobs. As per the Nasscom's forecast of jobs, there would be nearly one lakh jobs less in IT services industry compared to the previous year.

Terming the discussion on H1B visa 'political rhetoric', Ghosh said, “The discussions are not translating into legislative action. So, we are watching it very closely. We are not taking anything for granted.”

“During 2014-16 period, the number of visas issued has gone down by 43 per cent. Indian companies are taking only around 12 per cent of H-1B visas, which is a small number. President Trump has now come out with a document on skilling IT workforce and Indian IT companies in the US are one of the biggest investors in the pipeline of STEM skills,” she noted.

The NASSCOM has worked with Niti Aayog for coming out National IT strategy. Now, it is also planned to work with states and started the conversations.

There is a huge shortage of manpower in emerging areas, says Adobe Vice-President Abdul Jaleel

Stating that IT product companies continue to recruit graduates in good numbers, Adobe Systems India vice-president (employee experience) Abdul Jaleel said, “There is a huge shortage of manpower in emerging areas such as machine learning and cloud computing.”

“Many jobs in the IT industry is changing after the introduction of automation. We don't hire graduates for testing and quality assurance anymore as they were fully automated,” he told this paper on the sidelines of NASSCOM's HR summit here.

“Graduates with analytical skills and creative thinking can come and be part of any of our engineering team. The creative arena is the future,” he said.
Adobe Systems India has become one of the first companies to achieve gender pay parity.

“It basically ensured that we have a fundamental baseline, to begin with, while hiring people. The offer given based on the previous compensation was one of the main reasons for the pay parity between men and women. So, we stopped that,” he said.

“If someone comes with similar kind of background, skill, experience, he or she must get same regardless of his or her company and the background the person is coming from,” he added.

Adobe is investing very heavily with regards to reskilling their employees or engineers. “We are truly learning organisation and that's probably the only difference between the companies that succeed and the companies that get left behind,” he said.
