Centre awaits Telangana government to get NIMS lands

The Nims-Bibinagar has 160 acres but an AIIMS requires 200 acres.

Hyderabad: The Centre is waiting for the state government to acquire 49 acres of land around the Bibinagar unit of the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences to upgrade it as an All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

The Nims-Bibinagar has 160 acres but an AIIMS requires 200 acres.

The government had issued acquisition notices two years ago to owners of adjoining parcels of land but the process is yet to be completed, sources said.

The Union health ministry had stated that the land and the Nims-Bibinagar building had to be handed over without encroachments.

A source said, “Two months ago, a team from New Delhi had visited the hospital building and asked the state government to make certain changes and hand it over to them.”

A senior Nims doctor on condition of anonymity said, “In 2007, '50 crore from Nims-Panjagutta was diverted for the development of the Bibinagar unit. Will this money be handed back to Panjagutta branch which went bankrupt while developing the extension?”
