Kozhikode Municipal Corporation survey identifies homeless in city
KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode Municipal Corporation began a night survey on Wednesday to collect the data of homeless people in the city limit. The survey is being conducted as part of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana- National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) project of the central government aimed at providing shelters equipped with essential services to the urban homeless in a phased manner.
In addition, the mission would also address livelihood concerns of the urban street vendors by facilitating access to suitable spaces, institutional credit, social security and skills to urban street vendors to access emerging market opportunities.
The Corporation had conducted the survey using eight teams with four members each led by Corporation Health Officer Dr R S Gopakumar. Each team consists of a health inspector, two policemen and a representative of NULM. Based on the data collected by the teams, accommodation will be provided for them. “The teams will collect the details, photo etc of the homeless people and provide them facilities at the shelter home being constructed at Cheruvannur on a 22 cent plot provided to the civic body by the NULM,” he said. “There will be separate dormitories for men, women, transgenders and families in the shelter home,” he added.
The survey was inaugurated by Kozhikode Mayor Thottahil Raveendran at Moffusil Bus Stand premises on Wednesday night. The survey has been completed in one night. Ahead of the survey, the Corporation has already conducted two pilot surveys.
