Kozhikode: Punching at civil station soon

Koz district administration's move to ensure punctuality of employees.

KOZHIKODE: The district administration is set to introduce biometric punching in the civil station to ensure the punctuality of employees. It has submitted an estimate of Rs 8 lakh to the office of the land revenue commissioner where the processing is on. Two companies, including KELTRON, have submitted proposals for the project.

Collector U.V. Jose had said earlier that discussions were on for implementing punching system. Additional district magistrate Jenil Kumar told DC that the office of the land revenue commissioner had sought expert opinion from the PWD electronics wing on the project submitted. “Though it has gone up from the concept status, we are yet to churn out the details of implementation”, he added.

Though majority of the staff function well, a few befool the superiors by working even for less than two hours a day.

NGO association district president N.P. Balakrishnan told DC that installing punching machine will not pose any problem for a normal employee. “Only those who evade duty will be in trouble,” he said.

Various citizens’ forums welcomed the move saying punching would bring in discipline for the revenue staff. Tax Payers’ Association chairman P.T.S. Unni told DC that the move would help the revenue staff to ensure an inclusive system of functioning.

“The staff should ensure that all obey the system as the revenue department is the most powerful one in the government machinery. So their responsibility is high and should set a model for all employees in other subordinate offices,” he added.
