In Ernakulam district MVD inspection drive collects Rs 8 lakh as fines
Kochi: The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) on Wednesday carried out a massive vehicle inspection drive in Ernakulam district in which a record fine of over Rs eight lakh was collected towards fine and the licence of 70 persons was seized and recommended for suspension.
“The drive, as part of the enforcement of the recent Supreme Court Committee guidelines on road safety, realized a fine of Rs 8,49,400. The licence of as many as 70 drivers were seized and recommended for suspension for offenses such as overloading, riding/driving while talking on the mobile phone, signal violence and drunken driving,” said a senior MVD officer.
The special squad was led by Ernakulam Deputy Transport Commissioner K G Samuel and Ernakulam Enforcement RTO M Suresh. Nearly 100 officials, including Mobile Enforcement Squad personnel roped in from Kottayam and Idukki districts, took part in the special drive.
“Action was taken against a total of 1,286 vehicles. It includes nearly 20 bikes that were found modified. Goods vehicles carrying loads higher that they were allowed were also intercepted,” the officer said.
The exercise started at 4 pm on Tuesday and extended till 4 pm Wednesday.
