Telangana: Shop owner buried alive as slab collapses in downpour

The GHMC has identified 1,997 buildings of which 752 have been demolished and 96 repaired; 200 are stuck in litigation.

Hyderabad: The owner of a shop died when the slab of a dilapidated structure at Shivajinagar, Secunderabad collapsed following Tuesday’s heavy downpour. Police said that given the late hour, there were not many people around when the slab of Santhosh Electronics near Dokkalamma temple collapsed burying D. Gopal. There are about 20 shops in a row in the building.

The assistant city planner of GHMC’s Circle 18 had issued a notice to vacate the building for carrying out demolition but the owner had got a stay order from court. Gopal had taken a portion of the building on lease. The incident led to a traffic jam on the highly congested Shivajinagar road.

The GHMC has identified 1,997 buildings of which 752 have been demolished and 96 repaired; 200 are stuck in litigation. Some of these buildings were demolished by the owners themselves and new buildings have come up in their place.
