Kannur: Jumbo falls into well, rescue op on
Kannur: The forest department personnel, police, fire and rescue staff and local people are on a mission to save an elephant that fell into a well in Chandanakkampara, Payyavoor panchayat, near here on Tuesday night. The well is in the premises of Narukkum Cheethayil Chandran.
The rescue mission was delayed as an irate mob of farmers put the forest and police officials under siege for hours demanding immediate solution for the recurring elephant raids in the area. Later senior forest officials assured the public of various steps they will be taking soon to check the entry of elephant herds to the locality, after which the public allowed the officials to reach the spot
The well should be filled partially to allow the animal to come up, said an official. As the area has no road access it will take hours to make a road to the spot first using JCB which is on. It will be late night when the road construction process is complete to the spot which is about half kilometer away from the road. It is believed that one of the elephants of a herd that roamed the area wreaking havoc has fallen in the well. People of the area have been demanding preventive measures to check the frequent raids of elephant herds.
