Lives at risk as civic body sits on FOBs

Columns set up at several places; pleas fall on deaf ears.

Hyderabad: Scared to cross roads on the national highway, residents are requesting the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to expedite the work of foot over bridges (FOBs) in Miyapur and Chandanagar.

Pedestrians here miss accidents by an inch each time they cross the road. While the work on FOB in Kukatpally Housing Board was progressing swiftly, that on other bridges at Miyapur-Bolarum Crossroads and Chandanagar were progressing at a snail’s pace.

While the vertical columns were erected nearly three months ago, there has been no further progress in work hence.

Mr Mahender Reddy, a resident of Madinaguda, said, “This is a highway and is accident-prone and it is a nothing short of an achievement to cross the road without fear. The work on the bridge started last year and all we can see is vertical columns of stairs.”

According to a GHMC official, the construction of foot overbridges was delayed owing utility problem.

The delay in shifting of electric poles stalled the work, which has now resumed at Miyapur-Bollarum.

Similar is the case with Chandanagar FOB, which was stalled due to the delay in payment for the shifting of an electric pole.

The official said that the work of this FOB would be resumed in the next couple of days

Engineering student P. Harsitha, a resident of Chandanagar, said: Several students cross the road, and it is better if the bridges are built before any accident occurs.”

The official said that the KPHB FOB will be opened for public by July 31. The Miyapur Bolarum FOB was expected to be completed in August. A fortnight later, the Chandanagar FOB would be opened for public. GHMC official said: “Due to utilities problem there has been certain delay. However, we are expediting the works on all the three FOBs. Starting from July end, within three to four weeks, each bridge will be opened for public use.”
