Live bands: Karnataka High Court notice to city police chief

The court was hearing a batch of petitions concerning the admission of OCI students.

BENGALURU: The High Court issued a notice to the city police commissioner while hearing a batch of petitions filed by Lovers Night Pub and others.

The petitions have been filed challenging the legality of the notice issued by the city police for not having occupancy certificate (OC) of the building or not obtaining licences as per norms to the owners of live bands and bar and restaurants.

Centre told to make stand clear
The HC asked the central government to make its stand clear on Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) students’ plea of treating them on par with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) for admission to first-year MBBS courses.

The court was hearing a batch of petitions concerning the admission of OCI students.

The students have challenged the Rule 5(1) of Karnataka Selection of Candidates for Admission to Government seats in Professional Educational Institutions Rules, 2006 which provides powers to restrict admission to Indian citizens only.

The petitioners contended that they have been residents of the state for over 10 years and have completed most of their education in the state and that they are eligible for seats under the government and private/ management quota.

They contended that various states, including Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat among others, have made provision for admission to OCI students under government or management quota.

The court sought to know the government stand and adjourned the hearing to July 3.
