Good response for education drive in Malabar

Government schools in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Palakkad and Kannur districts have higher a number of students who joined this academic year.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The various campaigns started by the state government to save public education as part of the general education rejuvenation mission had more response in four northern districts than those in the south. This is evident from the higher enrolment ratio in aided and government schools as per the preliminary figures of the sixth working day. Government schools in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Palakkad and Kannur districts have higher a number of students who joined this academic year.

The report pointed out an increase of 6.3 percent for the aided sector with 70,644 new students and an increase of 5.4 percent for the government sector with 1, 15,327 new students. However, the unaided sector witnessed a drop of eight percent with 33,174 students less than that of last year. The total number of new students in schools is 1.86 lakh.

Among districts, the highest increase in student admission is in Malappuram with 32,964 students enrolled in classes 1 to 10. It is followed by Kozhikode with 20,043 students, Palakkad with 17,197 and Kannur with 16, 802 students. Of the total of 10,078 students who joined the first standard in government schools, half of them, 50009, were from Malappuram district. Malappuram district has also the most number of students-- 6.2 lakh-- studying in government and aided schools. It is followed by Kozhikode with 3.6 lakh, Palakkad with 3.1 lakh and Kannur and Thrissur with 2.8 lakh each.
