Chennai Metro Water department may cut down supply by half

With little help from showers, reservoir levels show almost no change.

Chennai: While storage levels in city lakes witnessed no improvement after the recent showers, the Chennai Metro Water department is mulling the possibility of cutting down daily water supply to half from its daily requirement. Against the city’s daily requirement of 830MLD, metro water department is now supplying 500MLD. However, due to the dry situation, from which there was little relief from recent showers, the department would reduce 30MLD, thus supplying 470MLD each day.

Though Chennai Metro Water department is relying on other sources to quench the city’s thirst, depletion of the total storage levels at the lakes, which stand at 117Mcft on Monday, is the rationale behind the decision to cut drinking water supply. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a metro water official said, “The level, which was at 131Mcft 10 days ago has come down to 117Mcft on Monday. We will reduce water supply till we find other alternatives for water procurement”. The four main lakes – Poondi, Chembarambakkam, Red Hills and Cholavaram – contribute an approximate of 70MLD of water to the city.
