Can new education committee address key issues in NEP?
CHENNAI: Though the new committee to finalise the draft of New Education Policy (NEP) consists of prominent educationists and scientists, the educationists are worried about whether the new committee can address the controversial issues as several important provisions of the draft policy are being implemented by the government. The Union HRD Ministry on Monday has set up the new committee to make the final draft on New Education Policy. The nine-member committee will be headed by the former Isro chairman K. Kasturirangan.
Famous educationists like Vasudha Kamat and Manjul Bhargava are named as the members of the committee. The committee is expected to start its work with immediate effect. The central government released the draft education policy prepared by the TSR Subramanium Committee on June 30, 2016. The report had many innovative ideas and it also had several controversial sections in it.
"Reducing the no detention policy from class 8 to class 6 was one among the key suggestions in the document. But, the union government has already approved it saying the states concerned can make their decision on this issue. Like that, many other decisions were implemented by the government before finalising the draft policy," an educationist noted. Another educationist also pointed out that Tamil Nadu also opposed many provisions including promoting the Sanskrit language at the meeting of Central Advisory Board of Education last year. Facing stiff opposition from many states, the central government had shelved the NEP.
