Hyderabad: The traffic police is doing their best to implement the Motor Vehicles Act through the e-challan system, but drivers in the city are one step ahead in thinking up new ways to avoid being caught by the cameras.
After receiving several complaints that traffic police were harassing motorists unnecessarily, the non-contact enforcement of violations was widely implemented. Here, the policemen on duty click pictures of riders who violate the traffic rules or the violation is captured on CCTV cameras. This allows the police to produce photographs as evidence in court.
Recently, the Gachi-bowli police registered two cases against bike riders who were found tampering with the registration numbers of their bikes. On May 23, the traffic police who were on duty at a Gachibowli junction found a bike ridden by Pavan Kumar, which had a Paytm sticker pasted over the rear registration number plate in order to avoid recognition should the rider commit an offence.
In another incident at IIT junction in Gachibowli, the traffic police stopped a bike on which three persons were travelling. Asked to produce the vehicle's documents, the bike rider, Shaik Asif, could not do so.
The police also noticed that the number plate on the front and rear ends had been tampered with. The vehicle number originally was AP 11 AS 6679, but on the front plate, the number 7 was removed and number 9 on the rear plate was removed.
The police concluded that this was done intentionally so that the vehicle and its owner could not be traced should they violate the traffic rules.
Following a complaint from the Gachibowli Inspector (Traffic) K Ramulu, cases were registered against the bikers Pavan Kumar and Shaik Asif, under sections 420 (cheating) and 201 (screening of the evidence) at Gachibowli police station.
