Srinagar is back after University of Hyderabad protest

Admin tried to drop the entrance centre.

Hyderabad: Students and the administration of University of Hyderabad are loggerheads again following a move by the university to do away with the entrance examination centre in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The move was opposed by a section of the students, especially those from the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association of UoH, which led to a positive outcome.

“Closing down the examination centre in remote areas is a ploy by the administration to eliminate the questioning voices from the marginalised areas of the country. We are glad we have overcome it,” said Kuldeep Singh Nagi, president of the Students’ Union.

Last year, some members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad attacked 25-year-old Amol Singh, a student of UoH, mistaking him to be a student from Kashmir. Amol Singh was backed by the J&K association and some other student outfits.

“The excuse given for the scraping of the examination centre was that no faculty member is willing to go to Srinagar as examiners, owing to the difficult situation in Kashmir. This is ridiculous as the entrance examination of JNU was conducted peacefully there a few weeks back. The J&K association believes that this is a move by the administration to curb our voice,” said Layeeq Ahmad Sheikh, president of the Jammu and Kashmir students association of UoH.
