Madhya Pradesh: Infant, with dead mother, returns to kin

He was handed over to his family members, who hailed from the village of Hardol in Sagar district.

Bhopal: The infant, who stirred nation’s conscience when he was found sucking his dead mother’s breast in a Madhya Pradesh town, was on Friday restored to his kin.

The 14-month-old Devi Singh who was found sucking his mother’s breast and nibbling a biscuit alternately while clinging to her body that lay by the side of a railway track in Damoh early on Wednesday morning was handed over to his aunt after the police identified the deceased woman.

He was handed over to his family members, who hailed from the village of Hardol in Sagar district, in the presence of minister Jayant Mallya, local district child welfare committee officer said.

The minister gave Rs 11,000 to his aunt for his upkeep besides promising to take immediate measures to ensure that his education would be totally funded by the state.

The officials and inmates of local ‘Bal ashram’ where the infant was rehabilitated temporarily after he was rescued, bade him a tearful farewell when he accompanied by his aunt and sister left the shelter home.
