Bengaluru: Sewage Treatment Plant at Bellandur Lake to run from July
Bengaluru: The Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at the polluted and frothing Bellandur lake would become operational from July, BDA commissioner, Rakesh Singh informed Bengaluru Development Minister, K. J. George here on Friday.
The commissioner, who was accompanying the minister on a tour of the city , said the lake was already being de-weeded and the Varthur lake would be tackled next. Assuring the minister that he would inspect the Varthur lake on Saturday, he promised to decide on the survey and eviction of encroachers after discussions with the zonal joint commissioner, activists, NGOs and locals.
Meanwhile, Mr George directed the tahsildar concerned to evict encroachers around the Nellurahalli, Siddapura and Sheelavantana lakes near Mahadevapura and and also survey and fence them with the help of revenue officials by the end of June.
Advising him to take the help of the local police and the Bengaluru Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF) to evict the encroachers near the lakes, he also directed him to take stern action against builders and others dumping debris and garbage into them.
The minister was responding to the complaints of locals and activists that the lakes’ boundaries had been encroached on and waste was being dumped into them.
While people of Palm Meadows in Whitefield complained to him about the delay in development of the Borewell, Vibgyor and Narayanapura roads, the executive engineer concerned explained to the minister that work on the footpath and drain had begun on Borewell Road and there was a delay in property acquisition for widening of the Vibgyor and Narayanapura roads.
Hearing him, Mr. George directed the BBMP special commissioner to issue Transferable Development Rights (TDR) to property owners and pave the way for road widening by the end of June. A BBMP engineer assured that all issues holding up work on the Signal- Free Corridor had been sorted out and it would begin in a fortnight at Hoody, Kundalahalli and Hope Farm.
