TSBIE told to submit report within 4 weeks

Around 10 lakh students took the exams in February and nearly 3.5 lakh were declared failed.

Hyderabad: Responding to students committing suicide due to the goof-up in the Intermediate exam results, the National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the Chief Secretary and the Board of Intermediate Education, seeking a detailed report on the matter within four weeks.

The NHRC also wanted to know what action had been taken against the guilty and relief, if any, provided to the families of students who ended their lives.

The commission on Friday responded to a complaint by advocate Sunkari Naresh on student suicides and took suo motu cognisance of a media report that 18 students had committed suicide reportedly for having failed in the examinations.

The commission said that the contents of the news reports, if true, raised issues of serious lapse on the part of the authorities which amounted to a violation of human rights. A thorough probe into the matter was required not only to punish the guilty but also to ensure that such incidents do not recur in future.

Elsewhere, a writ petition was filed by advocate Rapolu Bhasker before the High Court seeking a direction to the Intermediate Board to re-evaluate the answer sheets of all students declared failed in the exams. It will come up for hearing before Justice Abhinandan Kumar Shavili on Monday.

Around 10 lakh students took the exams in February and nearly 3.5 lakh were declared failed. There is little time left to re-evaluate the answer sheets of these students and hold advanced supplementary exams in time. Time is also running out for students who have to appear in the entrance exams like JEE, Neet and Eamcet.
