Bomb threat to sea bridge in Rameswaram

No suspicious object or explosive substance was found and the call apparently turned out to be a hoax.

Rameswaram: Police and other security agencies in the pilgrim island of Rameswaram were on the edge late on Friday evening as local police received an "information" that there was a bomb threat to the historic cantilever Pamban sea bridge connecting the island to the mainland.

The information reaching the Ramanathapuram police said that the Pamban rail bridge was being targeted by some 'terrorist elements', who after the last Sunday's serial blasts in Sri Lanka had allegedly sneaked into Tamil Nadu and were holed up in Rameswaram.

Following this, police force rushed to the rail bridge over the sea and the road bridge and did an extensive and thorough search of the structures.

No suspicious object or explosive substance was found and the call apparently turned out to be a hoax.

However, police wished to take no chances and began a search of all the tourist lodges in Rameswaram tonight.
