SHRC seeks report on drowning of boys

3 students drown in dam near Pune.

Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission directed the principal secretary, school education department, director of matriculation education, Chennai, and principal, ECS Matriculation School, Chennai, to file a report on the three students who drowned in a dam near Pune on Wednesday.

Initiating suo motu proceedings based on newspaper reports, chairperson of SHRC Justice T.Meenakumari directed officials on Thursday to file the report within four weeks. She also directed the Principal Secretary to issue instructions to all schools/affiliated schools/aided schools throughout Tamil Nadu, to take preventive measures including safety measures to protect the lives of school children by conducting training before undertaking tours. Students must be trained on safety steps to be taken, and awareness created on not crossing the danger zone.

According to media reports, three students of ECS Matriculation School, Chennai, who went on a summer camp, drowned in a village dam in Mulshi taluka near Pune. They were part of a team of around 20 students, who reached the dam for the summer camp, along with four teachers.

The students aged between 13-16 years were attending a week-long vacation camp. The children entered the dam to swim without assessing the depth of water in the dam. The victims were identified as Danish Raja, K.Santosh and Sarvanna.
